The Woods Hole Research Center addresses the great issues of environment through scientific
research and education and through applications of science in public
affairs. Climate change and the warming of the earth are at the core
of our research, and we specialize in global forests because of their
controlling influence on climate. ...The WHRC has had a long standing
interest in the major forested regions of the world. Remote sensing,
(the use of digital satellite images) has a particular utility in regions
that are large, poorly understood, and changing rapidly. ...One of our
long-term goals is the production of a
Global Forest Inventory
- a measure of current global forest extent and composition that will help
us monitor future changes in this invaluable resource....In an effort to move
forward global land cover mapping, we have produced here, from NOAA AVHRR data,
the first 1 km resolution land cover map of all South America. South America has
been divided into 39 different land covers including recent deforestation.
