The Mojave Desert Ecosystem Initiative (MDEI), Ca . (email: mailto:jessen@edcdgs9.cr.usgs.gov) "MEDI was initiated to develop scientifically based data layers in an ecosystem wide Geographic Information System (GIS). To overcome institutional barriers and ensure the widest access and use of the data, the system is being made available over the internet. Dept. of Defense MDEI objectives are to "develop and maintain GIS-based infrastructure that: (1) connects environmental databases residing at five military installations situated within the Mojave Desert Ecosystem (about 44,280 square miles), (2) with those residing at various DOI and other agencies that are responsible for non-DOD Federal lands within the region, as well as (3) with those residing within regionally associated State, county, and local government agencies, academic intitutions, and private organizations."
