(ECP and CTSP grantees, reports, and other sites of interest for conservation geograpy, mapping and GIS. Grantees are coded by program and year of grant at the end of their name/state, i.e. e91 means ECP grant in 1991. c=cstp, cm=ctsp-mac, cs=ctsp-software)
US Bureau of Land Management
US Bureau of Land Management . "The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages the remainder of the public domain -- a once vast expanse of land held in ownership by the United States Government for the American people...The 270 million surface acres under BLM management comprise one-eighth of America's land surface and amount to 41 percent of the land under Federal ownership..
US BLM Geospatial Information Center . The purpose of this page is to consolidate access to information about GIS which may be useful to the GIS community.
US BLM Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB) . The GCDB is a portrayal of the Public Land Survey System. GCDB is computed from BLM survey records (Survey Plats and field notes) and other survey control. GCDB is computed on a township basis.
US BLM National Applied Resource Science Center . selected projects: Interagency Ecological Mapping Effort ( Develop with cooperating agencies a common spatial framwork for defining ecological units of the United States. Blend the USFS, EPA, NRCS, and other approaches together as we can.), Implement integrated landscape analysis technology transfer initiative (Create a booklet that describes GIS techniques and methods used by BLM for integrated landscape resource analysis), Develop Forest Vegetation Information System. Downloadable Arc Data: Western Utility Group (WUG) scanned constraint maps @1:750,000 for each western state , Land Status by State . Interesting GIS and GPS Projects List .
US BLM MetaData and WWW Mapping Home Page . Extensive annotated links.
Convert GPS data to ArcInfo coverages , US BLM Paper/AML by Trimble Navigation and Dan Martin .
US Environmental Protection Agency
US Environmental Protection Agency . The mission of the United States Environmental Protection Agency is to protect public health and to safeguard and improve the natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which human life depends. Don't miss their Environmental Atlas Web Site: , Including an Interactive Mapper . "Welcome to the environmental atlas of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This site offers an online environmental map collection, links to other important collections, and information to help you understand environmental quality maps, mapping, and environmental information."
EPA Environmental Quality Web Site . "U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol M. Browner today unveiled an Internet Website that will allow citizens to easily obtain up-to-date, comprehensive, accurate environmental information about their communities simply by entering a zip code. The Website is part of the Clinton Administration's right-to-know programs that are designed to provide Americans with needed information about local pollution. "
State of the Environment Reports:
US EPA Node of the National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse . This node provides a pathway to find information about geospatial data available from the EPA. Geospatial data is used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify the geographic location and characteristics of natural or man-made features and boundaries on the earth. Hundreds of On-Line datasets :
US EPA Spatial Data Library System (ESDLS) . EPA Office of Information Resources Management (OIRM), along with the EPA GIS Work Group, developed the Environmental Protection Agency's Spatial Data Library System (ESDLS) that is a repository for the Agency's new and legacy geospatial data holdings. Users can access these data holdings through various Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications. ESDLS' primary objectives are: Provide the Agency with access to its geospatial data in ArcInfo format; Integrate its geospatial data in a standard, consistent, and substainable framework; Apply the appropriate standards and guidelines for management and use; Manage EPA geospatial data and associated GIS applications; Permit discovery and retrieval of EPA's geospatial data and associated GIS applications.
US EPA National GIS Program . ...The GIS Program is responsible for developing and maintaining an Agency-wide support network: participating in the review and evaluation of new GIS related technologies; promoting the sharing of GIS data, applications, and expertise; coordinating with external organizations concerning GIS and related geographic data activities; and serving as a focal point for GIS issues within the Agency. Projects include : OIRM/Enterprise Technical Services Division (ETSD) in Research Triangle Park, NC; Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP); Ecosystems Initiatives: ( The Great Lakes; The Gulf of Mexico; The Chesapeake Bay.)
US EPA Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program .The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) is a research program to develop the tools necessary to monitor and assess the status and trends of national ecological resources. EMAP's goal is to develop the scientific understanding for translating environmental monitoring data from multiple spatial and temporal scales into assessments of ecological condition and forecasts of the future risks to the sustainability of our natural resources.
US EPA EMAP National Environmental Monitoring Initiative . The National Environmental Monitoring Initiative is linking large-scale survey information and remote sensing with ecological process research at a network of multi-resource, intensive monitoring areas. The result will be greater understanding of what controls ecosystem health at the regional scale, where resource management decisions are made. ...Currently, you can query our database of national environmental monitoring and research programs by a subset of sampling designs and measurements.
US Fish & Wildlife Service
U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service GIS Home Page . see GIS Partnerships, Successes and Current Applications for stories on Great Bay, NH and Casco Bay, ME . Examples of GIS-GPS integration, including Gulf of Maine Coastal Ecosystems Program, Connecticut River Watershed, Klamath Basin Ecosystem and many others . Gulf of Maine project is set to launch an IMS server site soon. See Also: Identification of Important Habitats in Coastal New Hampshire (by Arnold Banner and Gerald Hayes, part of the Gulf of Maine Program) "We used gis to create grids of bathymetry, temperature and salinity gradients, and substrate, then used these parameters to create maps for a number of marine/estuarine organisms. "
US FWS National Wetlands Inventory . The National Wetlands Inventory plans, directs, coordinates, and monitors the gathering, analysis, dissemination, and evaluation of information relating to the location, quantity, and ecological importance of the Nation's wetlands. The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary . NWI GIS Section: Converting NWI DLG3 data to ArcInfo coverages.., An exercise for converting NWI dlg data to ArcView shape files.., Downloadable Data : The National Wetlands Inventory has many products that may be down loaded from our internet site. You may access these products by clicking on the "download data" text near the bottom of this page. Here is a list of the directories that contain products that may be of value to our users: dlgdata - All available NWI 7.5' quad maps that have been digitized and converted to dlg (digital line graph) format.
US Forest Service
USDA Forest Service Databases . GMDigest (gypsy moth suppression, eradication, and defoliation database), The Hopkins U.S. System Index-HUSSI, USDA Goverment Information Locator Service, Fire Effects Information System, Forest Inventory and Analysis National Database Retrieval System, Land Areas of the National Forest System, Autocad Drawing Library
US Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis National Database Retrieval System . Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) research units have participated in establishing a National Data Base Retrieval System (DBRS)....FIA research units also have made the (tree, plot, county) Eastwide/Westwide data available for downloading.
